Reform to increase citizens' rights

A landmark piece of social legislation designed to improve the rights of Manx citizens is set to begin its passage through the Manx parliament.

The Equality Bill outlaws discrimination on the grounds of age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation and disability.

If it becomes law, new rights will be enshrined in employment and the provision of goods and services.

Based on the UK Equality Act, enforcement aspects of the bill have been adapted for the Isle of Man.

After three years, the final draft has been agreed and the bill is due to receive its first reading in the Legislative Council next week.

Chief minister Allan Bell says the legislation will bring the most radical social reform seen in the Island for many years.

He says with new rights for individuals come new responsibilities for employers:
