Beach Buddies has another big job on its hands this weekend, as volunteers meet on Sunday morning to tackle an area which has been hit with large amounts of marine litter this last few months.
Langness is one of a handful of beaches in the Isle of Man which collects large amounts of marine rubbish decompose and do not go back out to sea, in contrast to areas such as the northwest coast.
The area is always a magnet for commercial marine items such as lobster pots, nets, ropes and fish boxes, and is one of the most likely places to find a “message in a bottle”, with three having been found in this area in the last 12 months.
If the last few weeks are anything to go by, then Beach Buddies can expect some more new volunteers to get involved. The charity is also particularly encouraged by the number of new family groups who have arrived in recent weeks, and warmly welcomes new volunteers.
There is no need for formalities - volunteers are simply asked to turn up and get involved. Safety talks are given to all first-time volunteers.
There has also been an increase in the number of teenagers joining the sessions for the volunteering part of the their Duke of Edinburgh awards.
Anyone wishing to join the team on Sunday is asked to meet at the Langness car park where all equipment will be provided by Beach Buddies, including gloves, bags and litterpickers. Most of the materials collected will be recycled.
