Original scheme abandoned

Infrastructure chiefs say they will press on with plans to redevelop  Douglas promenade - despite rejection of their original scheme.

Ministers have abandoned a £21 million project to transform the road and walkway - after an independent planning inspector backed the concerns of opponents.

Safety issues around relocating horse trams on the walkway were cited by the inspector, who recommended the scheme be refused.

Now the Department of Infrastructure is to re-draw plans for upgrading the road in stages, starting with a stretch between the Sea Terminal and the War Memorial.

DoI minister Phil Gawne says a new master plan for transforming the entire promenade will be produced - despite many constraints:
