A record 19 teams took part in the Barclays ‘Step Challenge’ in aid of Manx Cancer Help and Sport Relief held on Friday 18th March.
The annual charity event has raised over ?18,600 over the last three years. Last year’s total was ?10,600 and it’s hoped that figure will be beaten in 2016.
The challenge sees teams of four running up and down the internal stairwell of Barclay’s Eagle Court building on Circular Road, Douglas. The team which covers the most steps is the winner. In Fitness and in Health took the honours with 20,520 steps, second was First Names with 18,684 steps with PWC 3 a short way behind with 18,360.
The 19 teams that took part were: Manx Cancer Help, Appleby, In Fitness and in Health, Zedra and Continent8; three teams from PWC and KPMG; two teams from Dixcart, Steam Packet Company, Browne Craine and First Names Group plus ten teams from Barclays.
Neil Withers from Barclays, said: ‘The “Step Challenge” has really gone from strength-to-strength, which is in no small part thanks to everyone who has taken part. They show such enthusiasm for both the physical test and raising sponsorship money – some teams were already talking about next year and how they might improve their score!
‘Obviously there is only one winner, but we really want the experience to be fun for everyone, while raising funds for local charity Manx Cancer Help, and the UK charity Sport Relief. As well as the competitors we’d also like to thank Robinson’s, Mannvend and the Isle of Man Sport Institute for their support.’
Manx Cancer Help Fundraising and Events Co-ordinator, Gareth Nicholson, said: ‘This event gets better every year and having taken part myself, I was blown away by the atmosphere and competitive spirit among the teams. We’re very grateful to both Barclays and the teams that took part for their support and valued contribution to our ongoing fundraising.’
