Local Children's Hospice - Rebecca House puts their families first

by isleofman.com 30th March 2016

The children’s hospice, Rebecca House currently looks after 30 children and their families on the Isle of Man. Last year they marked 10 years of paediatric specialist palliative care on the Island. Everyone that needs the care and support this invaluable healthcare facility provides knows that it is a life changing service for them and their family. In addition once a year this specialist care is highlighted during a UK national Children’s Hospice week organised by the UK umbrella organisation Together for Short Lives.

This year the theme is Putting Families First and the week runs from Monday 23rd May through to Sunday 29th May. The Manx public are encouraged to organise a cake sale, get involved with their local children’s hospice or attend some of the fabulous events that have been organised.

Events start on Wednesday 25th May with a Pamper event at the Claremont Hotel. Tickets are ?7.50 which includes arrival drinks, lots of lovely pampering sessions including hand and arm massages, nails painting, how to ‘dress’ your hair plus much more. Body Shop products, amongst others, will also be on sale. Further details will appear on Rebecca House’s Facebook page nearer the time.

Thursday 26th May will see mini Mary Berrys and Paul Hollywoods bringing their cakes to Rebecca House for a cake off. This will include both an adult and children’s competition. Michelle from T Junction will be our wonderful judge with a lovely 1st prize for the winning adult and child.

It is also hoped that offices/schools and clubs will have a cake sale and that they will enjoy eating the cakes but also the event could raise funds for the local charity.

In the evening there will be an exclusive Tea and Gin party at the T junction. It is a ticketed event for ?20 per person which includes arrival drinks, afternoon tea (albeit at 7pm) plus the opportunity to try gin infused teas. A raffle with some very special prizes will also be held.

Friday 27th May will see the team in town, outside Marks and Spencer selling Rebecca House merchandise with some very special friends – rumours are a white rabbit and some bears may appear! This will be from 10.30am-4pm.

On the same day volunteers and staff will man the many tills at Tescos for a bag packing endurance from 10am-7pm. Volunteer bag packers very welcome for this event too.

This very eventful day with wrap up with a quiz at the Cat with No Tail with the quiz master of the Isle of Man, Dave Hughes. It is ?10 per team for up to 6 people. This event is being sponsored by MotaWorld.

The final day of this week will see Teddies on the Train – Groudle Glen and Rebecca House will run a fun day from 11am to 4pm. Bring your teddy for a lovely day out. ?4 per child (teddy goes free!).

All events can be booked through Event Manager, Sharon Connor at Hospice on sharon.connor@hospice.org.im or ring 647432.

Pictured is the lovely Grace Lee, of Douglas, aged 10 who is a tremendous supporter of the charity along with her family.

A recent interview by a patient whose child attends Rebecca House described the staff as angels in uniforms.
