No trams or shared space in proposals

The Department of Infrastructure has applied for permission to transform Douglas promenade – with amended plans after its last proposals were thrown out.

In a new planning application, the highways division has applied to make alterations to Loch Promenade and Harris Promenade.

In the proposals are new road surfaces and pavements, and a low-speed streetscape.

But there’s no mention of any work further along the prom – or of the fate of the horse trams.

The DoI’s last planning application for Douglas Promenade resulted in the plans being abandoned after a public inquiry over safety concerns about trams sharing the walkway with pedestrians.

Now, however, the department has resubmitted proposals it made for the southern end of the prom, with upgraded street furniture and a spacious layout.

In the application, the department says the work would come at the cost of more than 70 car parking spaces on hte prom.
