Green winning colour at Bunscoill Rhumsaa

by isleofman.com 11th April 2016
Green House at Bunscoill Rhumsaa has become the 2016 overall winner in Ramsey Town Commissioners’ annual bulb-growing competition.

Now in its 36th year, the competition sees the Commissioners provide pupils with daffodil bulbs, planting compost, a pot and growing instructions. The bulbs are grown by the children at home then brought to school for judging which, this year, was by the Commission’s head gardener Bobby Cunningham and the parks department’s Ian Holland.

The competition sees children from each of the infants’ and juniors’ houses - blue, green, red and yellow - awarded first, second and third prizes for their horticultural talents. Prizes are also presented for best bulb, best decorated pot and best house, while the overall best house receives the winner’s shield.

Presenting the awards Ramsey Town Commissioners’ deputy chairman Steven Bevan said: ‘It’s very refreshing to see the children take a genuine pride in looking after their bulbs which bring such a welcome splash of colour into the school after the long dark days of winter. Thanks are also due to the teachers and parents for their support of a competition which continues to enjoy such a loyal following after more than three decades.’
