Commissioner hits back at "whispering campaign"

Complaints over 2014 sacking from authority

A new Onchan Commissioner says he’s the subject of a whispering campaign – just a week after being returned unopposed.

Chris Quirk of Wybourn Drive was declared elected last week, when only five people came forward to fill seven vacancies.

But Mr Quirk worked for the commissioners as a community officer until 2014 when he was sacked for gross misconduct.

He says he’s now become aware of complaints against him – although he can’t find out who has complained or why.

Mr Quirk was sacked over allegations he drew a knife on a colleague – something he says he still disputes.

In a statement he says he’s believes someone has complained about his election, but can’t find out more from the Department of Infrastructure.

But Mr Quirk says he won’t allow the situation to distract him from his commitment to serving the local authority as an elected member to the best of his abilities.

And he says until he can find out more details he considers the complaint as being potentially vexatious.
