Pension debate deferred

by isleofman.com 19th April 2016

Motion to set up independent review rejected

The debate on Public Sector Pensions due to take place in Tynwald today has been put back until June.

The move is to allow Members more time to consider the issues.

John Shimmin MHK, vice chair of the Public Sector Pensions Authority, says it had become apparent that some Members were uncomfortable with Government’s proposals to address the sustainability of the Island’s public sector pension schemes.

A motion from Michael member Alfred Cannan to receive the Public Pension Plan - but then set up an independent review commission to review the options available and report back to Tynwald with recommendations next January - was rejected.

It was supported in the Keys by 15 votes to 8, but there were only 2 for and 7 against in Legco.

Mr Shimmin says he was reluctant to delay the debate - but feels it was the right decision
