Macmillan Cancer Information Centre marks tenth anniversary

by isleofman.com 28th April 2016

This week marks the tenth anniversary of the official opening of the Island’s Macmillan Cancer Information Centre, which is based in the main foyer of Noble’s Hospital.

The centre, which supported more than 600 people affected by cancer in 2015, serves as a one stop shop for information on cancer and local services.  This includes a visual map of cancer related literature to give a clear and consistent information pathway for patients. The centre also offers LookAhead, providing advice and support for people experiencing hair loss and associated problems as a result of cancer treatment.

Minister for Health and Social Care, Howard Quayle MHK, said: “The majority of visitors to Noble’s Hospital will pass by the Macmillan Cancer Information Centre.  It has come to play a vital role on our Island in educating and raising awareness about the many types of cancer: their prevention and treatment as well as living beyond cancer.

“In the past decade the centre – through its staff and dedicated volunteers – has helped thousands in our community: those with cancer, their friends and family, and our healthcare professionals.  Today is an opportunity to reflect on the contribution of everyone who has helped to shape and deliver the service.”

A committed team of volunteers help run the centre, many of whom have survived cancer and have a range of experiences and skills including social work, community nursing, specialist cancer nursing and counselling.

Barbara Scott, Director of Operations for Acute Healthcare, said: “The services offered to patients and their carers have grown over the past 10 years, going from strength to strength.  The volunteers are the foundation of the centre and are an inspiration to us all.”
