Offender had mental health issues

A Douglas man who sent threatening letters to the Treasury minister has been given a suspended sentence.

Sixty-three-year old John James Corran, of Allan Street, had previously pleaded guilty to a harassment charge.

He appeared in court today (10 May).

Corran was described by his advocate Roger Kane as a vulnerable man who had mental health issues and "mild mental retardation".

He had not intended to hurt Mr and Mrs Teare, was genuinely remorseful and was already undergoing treatment with mental health services.

Corran was handed a three-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, was barred from contacting the Teares or visiting their home, and was ordered to pay £125 costs, which will be deducted from his benefits.
