Group relieved at Equality defeat

Bill change would have outlawed case funding

A campaigner says he's releived a controversial attempt to change the Island's Equality Bill was defeated in the Legislative Council.

An amendment tabled by David Anderson MLC would have prevented individuals who claim their rights have been breached, from using money raised by a third party to cover their legal costs.

The move was defeated by six votes against - with only Mr Anderson and Geoff Corkish supporting the amendment.

Tony Watterson is the co-ordinator of the Isle of Man HIV Support Group.

He says the change would have made it difficult for those already at a disadvantage:
