Walkers from Simcocks tackled one of the most exciting mountain ranges in Britain as part of a demanding one-day team challenge.
Irini Newby, Taryn Pyle and Sarah Wolter from the Advocates based in Ridgeway Street, Douglas took on the Glyders Loop challenge in Snowdonia. The one-day event was organised by LawNet, a leading network of independent law firms covering the UK and of which Simcocks is the sole representative in the Isle of Man. There were nine teams and more than 80 people took part.
Simcocks director, Irini Newby said: “We started at 7am and the weather was fabulous. It was great for walking as it was beautiful and sunny with a breeze to cool us down. The bright, blue skies were a perfect backdrop to some stunning scenery. In places it was incredibly steep and the sharp, slate rocks meant the terrain was constantly moving underfoot.
“The highlight was scaling one of Wales’ most interesting peaks, Glyder Fachs – it is 994 metres above sea level. From the summit we were able to see the far western side of the mountain plateau where there is a huge natural display of rocks, soaring skyward like something out of a science fiction movie. It is called Castell y Gwynt which translated means Castle of The Winds. It gets its name from the noise that strong winds make as they pass through the tall, spiky rocks. We also had some fabulous views across to Snowdon and in the distance you can even see the Isle of Man.
“Our route also led us to the infamous Cantilever Stone. It looks as though it should topple over when people stand on it but it continues to sit in the same precarious position it has for centuries.
“The event organiser produced a very detailed training schedule which included three or four days of practice each week which we tried to follow but the scree made it a very different experience on the day. Taryn and I also took part in the Lisa Lowe Appeal Walk which covered 28 miles as “practice” for the challenge.
“The most rewarding part of the challenge was that we worked really well as a team, encouraging and helping each other along the way, and we met some great people. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and we are all very proud to have completed it without injury.”
