Commissioners have to pay for vandalism

by isleofman.com 3rd June 2016
Isle of Man Constabulary and Port St Mary Commissioners are seeking assistance finding out who is involved in a series of attacks that have resulted in damage to a dry stone wall. In what is a very unusual case of vandalism, the boundary wall of the Port St Mary Golf Course on Fistard Road has had its capstones pushed in on a number of occasions over the past year. The attacks appear to take place in evenings during the summer months, leading Police to suspect that youths may be involved. Over the past year some 20 metres of walling has had to be repaired at a cost to ratepayers of around ?3000.

Speaking on behalf of the Commissioners, Chairman Mrs Bernadette Williams, said, “We are absolutely dumbfounded as to why anyone would be involved in causing damage of this kind. Obviously old stone walls are vulnerable and easily damaged but there is neither financial gain nor pleasure to be had from pushing the top stones off them. Repairing them has absorbed precious budget from ratepayers funds, money which we would far rather have spent more productively. Unfortunately where it is happening is a lesser used road and not overlooked . The chance of anybody being caught in the act is remote. We are considering deploying cctv cameras in an attempt to find out why this happening, but feel that this is committing even more scarce resources to the issue.“

Anybody who can assist with this issue is encouraged to contact Alastair Hamilton at Port St Mary Town Hall on 832101, or Castletown Police Station on 822222.
