Skipping ‘improving pupils’ wellbeing’

by isleofman.com 13th June 2016
Primary school pupils will take place at the annual Celebration of Skipping.

Around 100 children from five schools – Manor Park, Victoria Road, St John's, Marown and Rushen – will take part in individual and team skipping challenges and demonstrations. The winners will take home trophies.

Skipping was introduced to schools a decade ago as a fun way to keep fit. The annual showcase of skills grew from that.

Clare Skelcher, a teacher at Manor Park Primary School, is organising the celebration, which takes place at Rushen Primary School from 10.30am to 2.15pm on Friday 24th June.

She said skipping has an ‘amazing’ impact on pupils.

‘Skipping is not only one of the best all-round exercises there is, in terms of the energy that goes into it, but you can skip on your own or as a pair or group. It’s ideal for building social skills.

‘Skipping is also great for co-ordination and really good fun. Skipping in schools has helped develop the concept of striving to improve on personal bests so it has a positive overall effect on pupils’ wellbeing.

‘This event will show off some of the talented skippers we have in our schools. Parents and the public are welcome along.’

The event is supported by Robinson’s and the Isle of Man Anti-Cancer Association.
