Island to benefit from advanced cardiac scanner thanks to British Heart Foundation (Isle of Man)

by isleofman.com 14th June 2016
Anyone undergoing an ultrasound scan of their heart at Noble’s Hospital is now benefitting from some of the very latest equipment in the field of cardiovascular ultrasound – all thanks to the generosity of British Heart Foundation Isle of Man (BHFIOM).

The donation means that the Island’s Cardiorespiratory Unit can take advantage of new technology, such as 3D imaging, as well as the ability to provide on-Island analysis of images obtained during a scan, with same-day reporting in the majority of cases.

Specialist Clinical Physiologist, Steve Berrisford, said: “Using ultrasonic sound waves – or ultrasound – to scan the heart began around 60 years ago and has advanced considerably. It is a harmless and very effective way of examining the heart.

“As with any technology, cardiovascular ultrasound is constantly evolving, and keeping up with the latest developments and equipment can be expensive. We are extremely grateful for the kindness and generosity of the BHFIOM and their donors. Without their support, having access to this advanced equipment with these sorts of capabilities, would have been some time off.”

The new machine will help to reduce waiting times as it will enable patients to be scanned more quickly and more thoroughly, with more accurate and consistent results – ultimately speeding up treatment for those who require it.

Charles Sentance, Chairman of BHFIOM, said: “The British Heart Foundation (Isle of Man) is committed to providing cardiac care equipment and services on the Island. Our principal recipients are Noble’s Hospital and the Ambulance Service. I take this opportunity to thank our many benefactors who enable the upgrades to continue. This new ultrasound system, which will be used thousands of time each year, will help to ensure that the people with heart problems on our Island can benefit from the very latest in diagnostic technology and go on to receive the treatment they need as quickly as possible.”
