The Mobile Family Library has launched a new project after receiving support from the Manx Lottery Trust.

The library has received a thematic funding award, under the Community Award programme, from the Manx Lottery Trust, a delegated partner of the Big Lottery fund.

The funding has enabled the library to purchase a suitable vehicle for its Bibliotherapy project, together with books, technology to show photographs and link to websites, book trolleys and other crucial materials. The vehicle, bought from Mylchreests, has been given a new livery by Signrite.

Bibliotherapy is a new scheme for the Isle of Man where books are used to encourage social interaction for those who do not socialise very often.

The aim is to use books in an informal situation to help people maintain a health and active mind.

Through the Bibliotherapy service, the Mobile Library will go to groups of people around the Island, taking books and technology to encourage discussion around topics selected by the librarians.

Initially it is being taken to older members of the community but it has far reaching benefits for all age groups. So far there has been an excellent response from those who have attended these sessions. They are very informal and intend to be as friendly and welcoming as possible.

Sessions can be held in the Family Library in Douglas on Mondays or at any suitable venue around the Island.

With the new Bibliotherapy van, the aim is to reach as many people as possible.

The Mobile Family Library already provides a one-to-one scheme with its Home Library Service and Bibliotherapy is an extension of that, bringing together people who may otherwise be isolated. Participants can relax and discuss topics, which are introduced by the librarians in a friendly atmosphere. Topics covered so far include childhood, the seaside and the Isle of Man past and present – but there are no limits.

Sandra Henderson, librarian in charge, said: ‘It is very exciting and rewarding to hear people having a chat about the topics we initiate and then progressing from there.

‘New friendships may be formed or rekindled and it is hoped the project will spread and develop throughout the Island improving the health and wellbeing of many.’

She added: ‘It is a fantastic project, which we have been wanting to pursue since hearing about its introduction in the UK, and we are very grateful to the Manx Lottery Trust for making this a reality. It enhances what we have always believed, that there are some amazing stories out there and everyone loves to talk if the subject is right and by doing this one feels happier and better.’
