Destination Port Erin for school pupils and elderly residents

by isleofman.com 23rd June 2016

Pupils from Kewaigue School will be joining residents from Reayrt ny Baie at Douglas Railway station tomorrow, Firyda 224th June, to take the train to Port Erin for a visit to the southern town. For several months the pupils have made weekly visits using the school minibus to the residential home in Douglas to share stories and memories, play board games, carry out craft activities, interviews and generally learn from each other.

The visit marks another way in which the children and residents can get to know each other. They will arrive in Port Erin station to visit the local park, carry out activities, have chips from the local chip shop, before leaving on a vintage bus back to Douglas.

Headteacher Adrian Shorthouse said: “The children thoroughly enjoy the visits to Reayrt ny Baie. It gives them opportunities to learn new skills, build relationships and find out about the lives of those older than they are. One resident who will be coming on the visit attended Kewaigue School over 80 years ago, which I find remarkable.”

Denise Nash, Duty Manager said: “The residents really look forward to the children visiting and have enjoyed talking to them about their lives and experiences. They are looking forward to spending the day with the children.”
