Ramsey Grammar School (RGS) is developing an International School Partnership with a school in Gumlek, Nepal.
Howard Green from the Pahar Trust, a Manx charity, recently visited RGS with Major Dhan Chand, an ex Queen's Gurkha Engineer, who was born in Gumlek.
After presentations on the charity’s work, the Year 8 students have been finding out more about the country in their form times. And at the recent cash in of epoints (which are earned by good performance in lessons and can be exchanged for prizes) students from year 8 collectively donated 5500 points, a huge total. These points will be cashed in to buy pencil cases, pencils and other materials with the schools crest which will be sent to Nepal for the children in the partner school.
Hopefully this is the beginning of a productive relationship which will improve the understanding of the developing world and build appreciation of other cultures.
Assistant Head of Year Robert Shimmin said: ‘We are delighted to be given the opportunity to build a partnership with a school in the developing world. We hope that this link will improve students’ understanding of the challenges faced by young people in Nepal and embed cultural knowledge and empathy into our curriculum.’
