The Manx Youth Orchestra’s summer concert is a stage and screen spectacular.
The concert takes place on Tuesday 19th July at 7.30pm at St Ninian's Lower School, Onchan.
Maggie Richardson, Head of Music Service with the Department of Education and Children (DEC), said: ‘We have a mixture of well-known pieces and those which might be less familiar to the audience.
‘The programme includes melodies from Bizet’s opera Carmen and jazzy arrangements of Cole Porter songs composed during the magical days of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers’ Hollywood.
‘It features Von Suppe’s Poet and Peasant Overture, featuring cellist Harriet Godby, and Three Dances from Edward German’s incidental music to Shakespeare’s Henry VIII, complete with thunderstorm effects.’
Some 70 young people aged 12 to 19 make up the senior Manx Youth Orchestra, the most advanced of the DEC-led orchestras that rehearse on Saturday mornings during term time.
Maggie said: ‘As well as rehearsing this lively programme in readiness for our summer concert, the orchestra is already looking ahead to its autumn term performance for primary schools, which takes place at the Villa Marina, and to its next overseas tour in 2017.’
Admission to the concert is free and there will be a retiring collection for the Friends of the Manx Youth Orchestra. The charity funds equipment and sheet music and subsidises tours.
