Peel and St John’s increased their lead at the top of the Premiership when they beat Castletown by 105 runs on Saturday. All the other matches were rained off which means the Saints now have a 45 points gap over Cronkbourne who have a game in hand.
Ollie Webster and Pete Lewis opened for the Saints with a stand of 64 before Webster fell to Garreth Roome for 32. New batsman Phil Littlejohns was in form and the total had reached 159 when he was bowled by Richard Jackson for 59. Nick Hawke then hit a sizzling 50 from only 20 balls, including seven fours and two sixes. Lewis fell to Bradleigh Cregeen for a well-crafted 61 and Nick White stroked 32 from 18 balls as the innings closed on 313 for 8.
The Castletown reply was led by an outstanding effort from George Burrows. He opened with Jack Newbery and was still there at the end after a fighting 107 from 111 balls. He held the innings together with some fine shots and excellent footwork. This was George’s second century of the season and took his total run count to 1,091. Sam Callister also made a vital contribution. He joined Burrows to take the score from 103 for 5 to 180 when he was bowled by Littlejohns. Castletown ended on 208 for 6 and, although they lost, they gained nine bonus points which took them to second place in the league.
