Manx students hoping to be on a (Swiss) roll at JA-YE Company of the Year competition

by isleofman.com 13th July 2016

Junior Achievement Isle of Man Company of the Year winners Opus, from Queen Elizabeth II High School, will be heading to Switzerland later this month to compete against more than 200 other young entrepreneurs from 35 other countries in the JA-YE Europe Company of the Year competition in Lucerne from July 25 to 28.

Across Europe more than 275,000 students took part in the JA Company of the Year programme, with team Opus - Connor Chappell, Thomas Clague, Raygie Dolloso, James Kearsley, Callum Staley and Jay Waters – creating Caebo, a product designed to increase the durability and life of chargers and cables for smartphone devices.

As one of the winning student teams Opus will present their product in Lucerne and be assessed by a panel of 10 judges who will evaluate their approach to communication, teamwork, problem-solving, objective-setting, planning and review, administration and financial systems, personnel management, product development, customer focus, marketing and sales, as well as financial results. How the students have developed their business skills is also assessed.

Junior Achievement Isle of Man chief executive Sue Cook said: ‘The Company Programme provides a platform for nurturing the next generation of business men and women and is recognised as the ultimate entrepreneurial programme for young people in Europe.

‘In Lucerne Opus will be up against the best of the best young entrepreneurs across Europe. The product Opus devised and the strength of the company they formed have all the right elements to impress the judges, as they did earlier this year when they took the JA Isle of Man Company of the Year title. Callum, Connor, James, Jay, Raygie, and Thomas will be great ambassadors for the Island in Lucerne and we wish them every success.’

A Social Media Audience Award will reward the team with the most ‘likes’ on the album created on JA Europe’s Face page, www.facebook.com/jaeurope.

Votes are open from July 11 to 26 and the winner will be announced on July 27.
