Retirement celebration for long-serving teacher

by isleofman.com 19th July 2016

Like many Island school children, it’s the last day for Kewaigue pupils on Friday before the long summer break. For one teacher at the school, it will be her final day that brings to close a long and successful teaching career. After 39 years of teaching at Kewaigue School, Janet Gilmour will be retiring.

Pupils, parents and colleagues, past and present, together with friends of Janet will be marking the end of an era in the life of this Douglas school by holding a celebration of her career, to show appreciation for the impact she’s made on their lives.

Headteacher Adrian Shorthouse said ‘Thirty-nine years is a very long time in any profession, but for a teacher to commit to the same school for such a long period of time is rather unprecedented. Many children and parents in the Island will have been taught by Mrs Gilmour over the years and benefitted from her skills, knowledge and passion for learning. We are all going to miss her.’

Director of Education Geoff Moorcroft said ‘Mrs Gilmour will have positively influenced the lives of many children during her time at Kewaigue School and they will have many fond memories of her. Her commitment and enthusiasm have been unwavering during her career and she has consistently developed strong relationships with pupils and their families. Everyone in the Department will miss Janet but wishes her a long, happy and well-earned retirement.’
