Nigel Dobson, Chairman of Garff Commissioners to stand for the Keys

by isleofman.com 25th July 2016
After much speculation in the area, Nigel Dobson has confirmed that he will be standing as an independent candidate at the forthcoming General Election. Nigel has stood against Steve Rodan, the new President of Tynwald, at the last two elections as a Liberal Vannin candidate.

Nigel said, “I have thought long and hard about this, not least because I will not be on the Island for the elections. My Son is getting married in Hanoi on my Mothers 81st Birthday, and I’m taking my mum to the wedding. My children expect me to be there and wild horses couldn’t keep me away. But I will miss critical parts of the campaign, not knock as many doors as I would like and not be here on election day. So the ‘no visit, no vote’ people will be disappointed in my campaign. But hopefully my record of public service over the past nine years will be in my favour. I am not here for two weeks or so in September, but I am here for the rest of my days.”

"The next five years will be a challenging time for the Island with the implications of Brexit not yet clear, continuing pressures on the public purse and an aging population and with fewer of our youngsters choosing to return to the Island after university. We have a wonderful lifestyle here on the Island and it is going to take imagination and a lot of hard work to ensure that we keep and improve it. I am by nature an optimist and I like to be proactive rather than reactive. This is how I am in my working life, and will endeavor to be if elected in my public life."

He continued, “I have consulted far and wide and received the support of fellow Commissioners, elected MHK’s and family and friends, now I look for the support of the people of the new constituency of Garff. I have spent all of my time on the Island living and working in Onchan and Baldrine, built a successful business and hopefully contributed to our community. Now I would like to contribute to the Island."
