Acclaimed Norman Wisdom show to visit Isle of Man

by isleofman.com 25th July 2016
A critically acclaimed play about the life of Sir Norman Wisdom will be performed in the Isle of Man with support from the Steam Packet Company.

Wisdom of a Fool is a one-man show which tells the story of Sir Norman’s journey from a tough and lonely childhood to legendary entertainer. Jack Lane, who wrote the play, performs as the comic wearing one of the famous ‘gump’ suits actually worn by Sir Norman, as well as taking on almost 30 other roles.

The suit has been loaned by Sir Norman’s son and daughter, who have both praised the show and Jack’s performance. Jacqueline Wisdom said it was ‘compelling’ and ‘incredibly emotional’, while her brother Nicholas applauded Jack’s attention to detail.

Wisdom of a Fool will be staged at the Gaiety Theatre in Douglas on 9th and 10th September as part of a tour across the British Isles.

Jack said: ‘I’m delighted we are able to include the Isle of Man in this tour, as this was the place Sir Norman called home for so long. I’m also really looking forward to performing in the splendour of the Gaiety Theatre.

‘Everyone involved in the production is proud to be working in association with the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company to bring Wisdom of a Fool to the Island, and I’d like to thank them for covering all of the transport costs.’

Jack, founder of the Engine Shed Theatre Company, has appeared in plays and musicals for more than 12 years, including work with The National Theatre and playing opposite Only Fools and Horses star John Challis in the record-breaking production of Peter Pan in Middlesbrough.

Music and direction for Wisdom of a Fool is provided by Kenny Clayton, who has composed music for stage, television and cinema, as well as working with singers including Dame Shirley Bassey and the Isle of Man’s own Robin Gibb.

Steam Packet Company Chief Executive Mark Woodward said: ‘Sir Norman was a much-loved and long-time Island resident, as well as one of the leading entertainers of his generation. We’re pleased to be able to assist the team behind Wisdom of a Fool to bring the play to the Isle of Man, so people here can enjoy the show.’
