The Commissioners were very pleased with the turnout of volunteers at the third work party at Coronation Community Garden held last Saturday (6th August).
15 volunteers came along and helped fill the raised beds, from a mound of soil delivered to the garden by Commissioner Dave Dentith, and three beds now being home to tomatoes, herbs, carrots and beetroots were planted up.
The project aimed at invoking a community spirit was devised by the Commissioners with a plan to turn the site of a former children’s playground into a community area that all ages can enjoy.
The Commissioners have provided the land and financial assistance to create the garden. A commitment of time has been given by a Steering Group formed from representatives from Ecovannin and local residents, and they have plans for regular work parties, now known as “Garden Parties”, which will be held on the first weekend of every month. So far the volunteers have planted a range of fruit and vegetables and are also experimenting with straw bale gardening.
Men in Sheds are working on two more raised beds which will be slightly lower than the current ones to make them child friendly. Hopefully they will be delivered in time for the next garden party which is to be held on 3rd September from 10am to 2pm. There is no great time commitment required; even if you can just spare an hour, it would be a huge help to the project. Everyone is welcome to come along and help put together the final vital piece of the garden – the compost bay. It is also hoped that the first potatoes will be ready to harvest.
Children are very welcome; at the last gathering they had great fun getting their hands dirty by rummaging in the beds to test if the potatoes were ready and hunting worms to be transplanted into the freshly filled raised beds.
The garden is located behind Coronation Terrace at the Strang – from the Strang Roundabout, head towards Mount Rule and Coronation Terrace can be found immediately on the right hand side. Park on the road and follow the lane that runs to the rear of the terrace; the garden can be found at the end.
