The 2016 PokerStars sponsored Golf Day in aid of the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK has this year raised a staggering ?38,000, the highest ever figure since the charity event was launched six years ago.

Sue Hammett, head of corporate giving with PokerStars which operates the world’s most popular online poker sites and has been based on the Isle of Man for more than 10 years said: “We are delighted to be the new sponsor of the Bobby Moore Golf Day here on the Isle of Man. It was great to see that the money raised this year set a new record and in the very year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of England’s World Cup success.”

She added: “The Bobby Moore Fund contributes vital money into life-saving bowel cancer research and we are proud to continue our association with Cancer Research UK through this event.”

Lars Ugland, chairman of the team which organised the Golf Day at Mount Murray said: “This year’s Golf Day very definitely broke all records and took the total raised by the event since it was launched to a magnificent ?151,000.”

He added: “We are very grateful for the support from PokerStars who sponsored the event for the first time this year, while backing from other companies and individuals has again been magnificent. We have already had feedback from those involved this year saying they want to take part again next year.”

The event was particularly nostalgic this year as it coincided with the 50th anniversary of the England soccer team, captained by the legendary and inspirational Bobby Moore OBE, winning the World Cup and staking his and the team’s place in the annals of soccer history.

Bobby Moore was aged just 51 when he died in February 1993 from bowel cancer. The charity fund founded in his memory by his widow, Stephanie Moore MBE and since then more than ?22m has been raised for research into bowel cancer.

“The credit for so much that has been achieved goes to Stephanie who has made people aware of the sneaky killer that bowel cancer is, ” said Mr Ugland, who with his wife Geraldine, were close friends of Bobby Moore and have continued the relationship with Stephanie Moore.

Stephanie Moore said: “We are so grateful to Lars, his team and PokerStars for hosting such a wonderful event in Bobby’s name and for raising such a huge sum for vital research into bowel cancer. I’m incredibly heartened that the event raised more than ever in its six-year history – it’s a huge testament to the fantastic organisation and enthusiasm of those involved, but also to the fond memories so many have of Bobby.”
