The Isle of Man Army Cadet Force has been awarded Best Turned Out Unit and Isle of Man Sea Cadet Morgan Farrell Best Turned Out Individual on parade at the 2016 Tynwald Day ceremony.
In recognition, the Army Cadets received a donation of ?50, a certificate signed by the President of Tynwald, Steve Rodan MLC, and an engraved plaque. Morgan Farrell was also presented with a certificate and plaque.
Receiving the award on behalf the Isle of Man Army Cadet Force training officer Lieutenant Daithi O’Regan said: ‘It’s a great honour for the Isle of Man Army Cadet Force to receive the award for Best Turned Out Unit at this year’s Tynwald Day ceremony.
‘Tynwald Day is one of the most important dates in our calendar and the cadets are aware of its importance and meaning. As such, a significant number of hours are invested in preparation, by the cadets and staff, to get it right. I'm delighted that their efforts have rightly been recognised.’
While in the Legislative Buildings Lieutenant O’Regan also took the opportunity to support the 22 Push-Up Challenge in the Millennium Room under the watchful eye of Mr Rodan. Similar to the ‘ice bucket challenge’ that trended on social media in recent years, the 22 Push-Up Challenge began in the military to raise awareness of post traumatic stress disorder among war veterans, 22 being the daily number of serving or ex-serving members of the military who take their own lives. The challenge tasks participants to upload a video of themselves completing 22 push ups for 22 days. With each upload, participants nominate and tag somebody else to start their own challenge. 13-year-old Morgan Farrell, from Douglas and a student at Bemahague School, said: ‘I was really proud to have received the award; to be on parade at the Tynwald ceremony was quite an experience. I’ve been in the Sea Cadets for a year now and hope to go on to have a career in the Royal Navy.’
Presenting the awards Mr Rodan said: ‘The exacting attention to detail shown by military organisations represented at St John’s contributes enormously to the sense of tradition and national pride that distinguishes Tynwald Day. The ceremony also provides a welcome opportunity for them to showcase their precision training to a wide and appreciative audience. I commend the Isle of Man Army Cadet Force and Morgan for their dedication and making such a positive contribution to our National Day celebrations.’
