MakeMarket Makes Music

by isleofman.com 22nd August 2016

This week MakeMarket: A Creative Industries Takeover, turns the Market Hall, Douglas over to one of the Island’s most popular creative industries – music.

From 21 until 26 August Chris Kelly, a local musician and music teacher with over 15 years’ experience, will be teaching, offering advice on improving performance skills and creating a cumulative music project which he will be recording throughout the week. Chris will be inviting all visitors to the Market Hall to take part, whether or not they play an instrument and it will include traditional music skills as well as in-situ sounds. The finished track will then be released via the MakeMarket social media sites, and recorded for future events.

If you fancy taking part in a ‘wild band’ workshop – described by Chris as a big jamming session – on Thursday lunchtime (1-2pm). Chris and MakeMarket intern Louisa will provide chords and lyrics – all you need to do is turn up with your voice or instrument, and your enthusiasm. There’s no need to book, and it’s free of charge.

And the music doesn’t stop there. On Monday evening MakeMarket plays host to vocal performance group Ursula and community choir Meraki Music with the chance to both listen and take part. On Tuesday afternoon, Laura Rowles from Mannin Music is offering Mini Musician sessions for young children which will include rhymes, song and dance with a Celtic theme (?3 for non-walkers and ?6 for toddlers), and throughout the week there will be a number of impromptu live performances as well as the opportunity to buy CDs from local musicians. Details are available from www.facebook.com/MakeMarketIOM, where you can also book a short taster session on any instrument with Chris for just ?5.

But the music industry isn’t just about performance, and MakeMarket is delighted to offer a one-off Foley session for budding sound engineers on Friday 26 August. Foley is the process of recreating everyday sounds to over-dub onto films and TV shows and this workshop covers some basic techniques and offers participants the chance to recreate some iconic sounds from the industry. This is a great opportunity for film & media students as well as established short film makers to get some hands-on experience, and, once again to enable as many of those with ‘day jobs’ to attend, the session runs at lunchtime, from 1pm-2pm. A small charge of ?5 is payable on the day.

It’s music week at the Market Hall, where MakeMarket is bringing the sounds of summer to Douglas.
