A major technological development that could benefit thousands in the Isle of Man living with hearing loss has been demonstrated in the Island for the first time.
British Society of Hearing Aid Audiologists President Peter Sydserff introduced the new hearing aid Oticon OPN™ at an event hosted by specialist hearing aid provider Hidden Hearing in Douglas.
Developed by respected manufacturer Oticon, OPN™ is a world-first, linking the hearing aid, via an app, to the user’s emails, social media, doorbell, home alarm system, baby monitor and other devices. The technology, which in the Isle of Man is exclusively available from Hidden Hearing, can considerably improve quality of life for the user, and is regarded as the closest sound to natural hearing.
During the presentation organised by Hidden Hearing, which has recently moved from Onchan to Tracey Bell clinics in Douglas, Castletown and Ramsey, Peter demonstrated the product. As a hearing aid user himself, Peter was able to highlight how OPN™ has benefited him.
He said: ‘It’s fantastic to be able to showcase a product which can make such a difference to the lives of so many people. It has such a wide variety of benefits and can help so many different age groups, from young people, where the hearing aid will read out a social media alert or email, to older people, where they will be able to hear their door bell from a quiet part of the house.
‘With a population in the region of 87,000, the Isle of Man is likely to have between 8,000 and 9,000 people with some level of hearing loss, and many will benefit from OPN™ just as I have. For a short while now I have been using the hearing aid and have found it to be invaluable – it just makes everything that bit easier.’
