Oompa Loompa Party

by isleofman.com 24th August 2016

An Oompa Loompa Party was held at Harvey Briggs Onchan Library to celebrate The Big Friendly Read Summer Reading Challenge. The Big Friendly Read is a huge event marking 100 years of Roald Dahl produced by The Reading Agency and delivered by libraries throughout the British Isles. Children reading up to 6 books of their own choice receive a collector’s folder and postcards of Dahl’s best loved characters illustrated by Sir Quentin Blake. There’s also dazzling rainbow glasses and other amazing Dahl themed surprises to collect.

Children taking part in the challenge can join fun activities and competitions such as making Dream Jars, designing Dahl inspired bookmarks, or fizzwizzing around Onchan on a Story Trail.

Librarian Pam Hand said: ‘Thank you to our sponsors Old Mutual International of Onchan for enabling us to encourage reading on a giant scale. The Big Friendly Read is open to children at any reading level, and we have a wonderful choice of books for all ages. It’s fun, friendly and free for children to take part.’

Clare Gerrard, manager, Old Mutual International comments: “Investing in the local community is extremely important to us and we are delighted to be supporting this initiative once again. It is a really great theme this year and one that I am sure, both children and parents alike, will find exciting!”

The Big Friendly Read runs until Saturday 17th September.
