On Thursday, the Humanity and Equality in Abortion Reform (HEAR) campaign will be launched in the Isle of Man, a progressive and humane movement to affirm the dignity and right to life of every human being on the Isle of Man.
Right To Life Patron Lord Alton of Liverpool, as well as our Executive Officer Peter D. Williams, have been invited to the HEAR launch to speak there. Lord Alton will give a speech and Williams will give a presentation on humanity and equality as these principles relate to abortion reform.
Peter D. Williams said:
‘I am honoured to be invited to speak at the HEAR launch, and proud to support this important campaign, in a territory that has hitherto had abortion laws that in many ways are far ahead of UK legislation.
Nowhere else in the world has an abortion law that requires that pregnancy be ended after 24 weeks (when a baby is ‘viable’) in such a way that the unborn child will be born alive, or that unborn children who are born alive accidentally before that should should be cared for by the surgeon involved. The Manx law also has excellent procedural and evidential safeguards.
No abortion law can truly be regarded as ‘humane’, however, but HEAR has excellent prescriptions for how it can be further humanised. Great Britain has a lot to learn from the Isle of Man, as from our Irish neighbours, and I look forward to celebrating the positivity and vision of the Manx campaign on Thursday.’
