Young people invited to Step into Sport

by isleofman.com 7th September 2016

Young people can Step into Sport via a Manx Sport and Recreation (MSR) programme that restarts next week.

After-school sessions from Tuesdays to Fridays are for children in Reception class and Years 1, 2, and 3.

Featuring rugby, multi-sports, athletics and badminton, the hour-long sessions from 4pm cost just ?1.

‘This gives younger children the opportunity to try new activities in a safe, structured and, most importantly, fun environment at the National Sports Centre, where there are new facilities and equipment after last year’s flood,’ said Kirsty Cooper, Sports Development Officer.

Step into Sport sessions for those with disabilities or special educational needs take place every weekday.

On Mondays, football for four to 18-year olds takes place at 4.15pm. ‘No Strings’ badminton for those 8 and over takes place at 5pm on Tuesdays. On Thursdays it’s multi-sports from 4.15pm for four to 18-year-olds. These sessions all cost ?1. Admission to the NSC fitness zone is usually restricted to those aged 16 and over but 14 to 16-year-olds with disabilities/special needs can also use the gym for just ?2 from 4pm to 5pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Signing up forms for all these sessions can be found under ‘term time activities in the National Sports Centre section of www.gov.im

Kirsty said: ‘In our Strategy for Sport we recognise that sport and activity can enhance the lives of those who are disabled or have additional needs and we are pleased to offer tailored sessions.’

In addition, MSR offers all 14 to 16-year-olds drop-in sessions at the fitness zone, with no need to pre-register, for just ?2 from 4pm to 5pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

For further information on Step into Sport, contact the Sports Development Team at MSR on 688592 or email sduenquiries@gov.im

The sessions run during term-time only as MSR offers separate programmes during school holidays.
