A Merchant Navy Captain, a 1970s Herring Fisherman and a Deep Sea Diver… one special evening with Rushen Heritage Trust. There are many stories of the sea across the Isle of Man from famous shipwrecks to the arrival of the ‘Gutter Girls’ during the boom years of the herring fishing.
For one special evening, Rushen Heritage Trust are hosting a series of interesting talks with traditional music led by our Story of the Sea Heritage Action Team.
Presented by Alan Jackson, the evening will include the fascinating story of Captain David Clark and his journey from “Cadet to Captain”, Dessie Robinson and his memories of herring fishing in the 1970s when he was a deck hand on the fishing vessels out of Port St Mary and Michelle Heywood from Discover Diving, who will talk about her experiences beneath the seas of the south.
This one-time event will take place on Thursday 6th October at the Falcon’s Nest in Port Erin from 7pm. Tickets are just ?5.00 per person and can be purchased in advance at the Falcon’s Nest or you can buy them on the door on the evening of the show.
Rushen Heritage Trust is a charity run by volunteers, who create their own projects to preserve the heritage of our local community. With four Heritage Action Teams who cover topics of interest in Tourism, Stories of the Sea, Stories of the Land and WW2 Women’s Internment, there is something for everyone to enjoy and take part in – whether from sharing their own memories, getting involved in research, coming along to our exhibitions and events, buying our publications or donating.
2016 has been an exciting so far for Rushen Heritage Trust, with three exhibitions that have attracted over 5,000 visitors, a second book publication and appearances at a range of events on the island. In October, our Story of the Land team launch two new interactive walks in Port Erin and Port St Mary on our new mobile app “Isle of Man Walks” – so our programme is not quite over yet!
