Creative Spaces’ at the Market Hall

by isleofman.com 13th September 2016

The question of what makes a ‘creative space’ was the inspiration for local architects and designers to collaborate on this new exhibition at the Market Hall, Douglas.

Architecture is the latest theme of this summer’s MakeMarket: A Creative Industries Takeover, and ‘Creative Spaces’ is a display of ideas and proposals from architects, other creatives and some from the commercial world all fired with enthusiasm by last week’s visit by regeneration expert Erika Rushton from Liverpool’s Baltic Creative.

Many people in the Creative Industries work on their own, but, said Erika, the collaboration and bouncing of ideas around a ‘creative hub’ can have a positive effect, allowing people to share the costs of basic infrastructure and creating a space where businesses can flourish.

With this in mind, and with the lack of any such space here, workshops last weekend allowed these professionals to get their ideas down on paper in a display which is open to the public at the Market Hall, Douglas until 1 October, 9am-5pm Monday to Saturday. Also on show is a video made during the workshops showing how architects, designers and creatives collaborated to fuse their ideas into ‘creative spaces’ that could work.

The exhibition also includes the ‘Alternative Douglas Masterplan’ from local woman Jasmin Eastwood and her fellow architect Jade Meek. The design, their Master’s Degree thesis, was nominated by Liverpool University as its entry for the RIBA President’s Medal Award and was first presented locally at Noa Bakehouse last August.

‘Creative Spaces’ is a joint venture between MakeMarket: A Creative Industries Takeover and the Society of Architects, and is supported by DED, UCM, the Isle of Man Arts Council, Culture Vannin and the Manx Lottery Trust.
