50 riders and ponies take part in new Mounted Games League

by isleofman.com 14th October 2016

Ballavartyn Equestrian Centre was full to the brim on Friday October 7th as registered competitors took part in the Isle of Man’s very first Mounted Games League event.

Following on from a successful demonstration at this year’s Royal Agricultural Show, Stella Hampton and her team from Ballawhetstone Stables and Pony Club Centre went about organising the Mounted Games League, with assistance from the Isle of Man Pony Club.

Supported by Mylchreests, the Mounted Games League galloped to a sensational start with 50 riders split into 10 teams competing in five different races during the course of the evening.

Races including bending through poles, moving balanced cups along a course, stepping stones and ‘sock in a bucket’. At first glance the games appear fairly straightforward but when completed on horseback they are not so simple.

‘We are so pleased with the numbers who have registered to compete in the league,’ said Stella. ‘It’s all about having competitive fun on horseback. The riding style is totally different when concentrating on the obstacle you need to tackle and we are thrilled to be able to run such a fun and unique event with the support of Mylchreests.’

Spectators watched on from Ballavartyn Cafe during the evening, seeing the races unfold with the luxury of hot drinks and cake. One mother, Emma, said: ‘Stella really has gone above and beyond for the Ballawhetstone Pony Club children. She has ensured that some of those entered have a chance to compete despite not owning their own ponies, which is a really kind thing to do.’

Alice Corrin, Isle of Man Pony Club, added: ‘During the evening the competitive edge of the experienced team captains was on show as they shouted and encouraged their less experienced team mates to complete the tasks quickly.

‘The evening concluded with a prize presentation of rosettes for all who take part. Throughout the season we will keep a tally of results and there will be a championship night held at the end of the season.’

Although registration for entrants is now closed, spectators are welcome to come and watch the fun from the viewing gallery in Ballavartyn Cafe. Events takes place on the last Friday of the month, with the next scheduled for Friday 28th October, which will include Hop Tu Naa-themed games.
