The BIG Draw – Artreach Half-term Workshops at House of Manannan

by isleofman.com 14th October 2016

Professional teaching artists, Kate Jerry and Colette Gambell will be in residence at the House of Manannan in Peel, during October half term delivering a Viking inspired art workshop as part of the BIG Draw.

The Big Draw is the world's biggest drawing festival from The Campaign for Drawing and is for anyone who loves to draw. Kate and Colette of Artreach Studios, regularly run art workshops for children and adults at the Isle Gallery, Tynwald Mills and other art outreach programmes.

Anthea Young, Education Services Officer for Manx National Heritage said:
“We are delighted to welcome Kate and Collette to the House of Manannan and look forward to working with them on the BIG Draw project.
The workshops coincide with the launch of Valhalla, our latest exhibition at the House of Manannan and offers each child participating the opportunity to create their very own doorway to another world.
The Viking hall of Valhalla has 540 doors and using our new exhibition for inspiration, children will use pens, charcoals and clay to create a door worthy of Asgard. The children will pick their favourite drawing to produce a model door or wall plate out of clay to take home”.

Children will develop their drawing and design skills to generate ideas for their clay sculpture and use etching, stamping and mark making techniques to create the final ceramic artwork. Before participants collect the finished ceramic doors of Valhalla, the artworks will be dried, kiln fired and glazed with oxides before one final kiln firing.

Artreach Studios have been providing art enrichment workshops for Children since 2012. Techniques and mediums include painting, drawing, collage, printmaking and sculpture.

Artist and instructor Kate Jerry explains:
“We believe in cultivating the intrinsic creativity of every child and we believe in the importance of engaging children in visual art making as a conduit for building confidence, pride, and self-esteem through constructive expression. Our specialised children’s arts programming are designed for your child’s explorative engagement with a plethora of techniques and visual media that centre on originality”.

The BIG Draw Half-term Workshops take place between 24 and 28 October from 2pm to 4pm daily at the House of Manannan in Peel. The workshops are suitable for ages 6 - 16 years. Children under 12 years must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets cost ?12.50 from the House of Manannan shop or book by calling (01624) 648090. Places are limited.
