Observe Remembrance Day through Family History Research

by isleofman.com 17th October 2016

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is to hold a Family History Open Day between 12noon and 4pm on Saturday 12th November 2016 at their chapel on Woodbourne Road, Douglas. The event is supported by both the iMuseum and the Isle of Man Family History Society. Visitors to the event will be able to learn about and access various resources free of charge, that can help make discovering and recording your family history straight-forward and rewarding.

FamilySearch, an online-based service provided by the Church, is the largest genealogy organisation in the world and will be the main feature of the event. FamilySearch provides a service to all, at no cost, with 3 billion names from all over the world and is used by millions of people each year as a way of learning more about their family history.

Additionally, the iMuseum have provided a free subscription for the event, so that visitors can also make use of their online Manx Newspaper records from 1792 through to 1960, as well as other records including Parish Registers and Registered Deeds Indexes.

Along with the displays set up by the Church there will be displays provided by the Isle of Man Family History Society detailing how their services may be accessed and of interest to those wanting to learn more about those who have gone before them.

With the event being organised a day after Armistice Day and on the eve of Remembrance Sunday, there will also be photographs of some servicemen from the world wars and their stories and other world war records and memorabilia. In addition, the availability of a range of Manx and British World War Records will be featured, and the open day will offer the ideal opportunity for visitors to reflect and observe Remembrance Day.
