Ramsey Grammar School pupils, Emily Corkill and Nell Davies have won prizes in a nationwide UK, Spirit of Normandy, Young Historian Project competition that is championed by Manx D Day veteran, Hector Duff. Hector asked year 9 pupils to enter the competition when he recently visited them to talk about his experiences in World War Two.
Numerous Ramsey Grammar School pupils entered the competition and Emily received a Very Highly Commended Certificate from the Spirit of Normandy Trust on her Local History Project, which looked at key WWII sites such as Radar stations throughout the Isle of Man, while Nell received a Highly Commended Certificate for her Family History Project, from the Young Historian Project for her project on her grandfather and his life in Germany and the UK.
Both girls received book tokens as well as their certificates and they will formally receive their certificates from Hector Duff at the Ramsey Grammar School Prize Giving Ceremony on 20 October 2016. Numerous other students received certificates for their projects and they will be presented at a special assembly in November.
History Teacher, Andrew Wilkinson said “we are delighted that Ramsey Grammar School has been so successful in the Spirit of Normandy, Young Historian Project, Emily’s and Nell’s projects were outstanding’ and Trevor James who is director of the Young Historian Project said that ‘the judges were very impressed by both entries’.
