Local Artist's Tynwald portraits feature in London art exhibition

by isleofman.com 24th October 2016

A solo exhibition at the Russian Centre for Science and Culture in Kensington of works by acclaimed local artist Svetlana Cameron features paintings with close links to Tynwald and the Isle of Man.

Among the 30 works by Russian-born Mrs Cameron are the portraits of former Speakers of the House of Keys Tony Brown and David Cannan, and three paintings depicting different aspects of Tynwald Day. Laa Tinvaal is a scene of celebration with Manx dancers and Tynwald Hill in the background; another shows former President of Tynwald, Clare Christian captioning the new Acts of Tynwald in the Church of St John; and a third is of The Lord Bishop of Sodor and Man, the Rt Rev Robert Paterson MA MLC, also in the setting of the Church of St John, in his convocational robes holding the diocesan crozier.

Among guests at the private view was the President of Tynwald Steve Rodan MLC who said: ‘Svetlana' s wonderful array of Manx paintings at her first London exhibition has greatly raised the Isle of Man's profile. It was a real pleasure to be invited to talk about their significance and to promote the Island and the story of Tynwald to the assembled guests. We can be proud to have such an excellent ambassador for the Isle of Man in Svetlana.’

Svetlana Cameron’s portraits of the two former Speakers hang in the House of Keys Chamber and that of the former President of Tynwald in the Legislative Buildings’ Finch Road foyer.

‘Svetlana Cameron: An Exhibition of Classical Portraits’ is at the Russian Centre for Science and Culture, Kensington High Street, London until October 31 and is sponsored by Knox Private Office.
