10th anniversary for popular international development project in Island schools
It’s a special year for the One World Charity Challenge as it marks its 10th anniversary of working with Year 12 students in the Isle of Man. Over the past decade around 1,000 students have taken part in the Challenge and nearly ?250,000 has been distributed to the charities they have represented in the competition.
This year’s Challenge, which tasks teams of students to research a charity working in international development and to present their findings in an engaging multimedia presentation, was launched recently with a ‘Meet the Charities Day’. This gave students the opportunity to find out more about the participating charities, many of whom are small Manx-based operations, and choose the one they wish to represent.
Last year’s winners were a team from Ramsey Grammar School who delivered a presentation on Excellent Development, a charity involved in creating safe, clean water supplies through the use of sand dams for communities in rural Africa and Asia. The team won ?4,500 in funding for Excellent Development.
The One World Charity Challenge is run by the One World Centre with generous support from the H&S Davidson Trust which has kindly provided the prize money since the project’s inception. In recent years, this prize fund has been matched by an additional contribution from the Isle of Man Government’s International Development Committee in recognition of the role the competition plays in raising awareness of development issues among the Island’s young people.
The teams will now begin researching their charities with a view to starting work on their presentations for the in-school heats. As well as learning about international development issues, the students gain useful research, team work and fundraising skills as well as experience of presenting to an audience. The finalists from each school will go forward to a grand final in front of invited guests at the Manx Museum in March.
