As a result of recent protests at the site of on-going regeneration at Market Place in Peel, a meeting was arranged at the Centenary Centre with a view to learning more about future plans and the planning process.
Local Commissioner, Hazel Hannan, welcomed everyone to the meeting and introduced the panel of speakers; Chris Thomas MHK (Minister for Policy and Reform), Mrs Diane Brown (Head of Planning Policy in the Cabinet Office) and Miss Sarah Corlett (Planning Officer based in the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture).
Apologies were received from both Glenfaba and Peel MHKs Geoffrey Boot and Ray Harmer.
Chris Thomas MHK had previously spoken at the second protest/demonstration held recently at St Peter's Church in Market Place, where he readily agreed to speak at this meeting.
The meeting, which was very well attended by residents of Peel and other areas, heard details about future planning policies which would include the town, and more specifically the Strategic Plan which will feed into the Western Area Plan; encompassing Peel together with the parishes of Patrick, German and Michael.
The last development plan for the town of Peel was approved in 1989.
Comments made by government representatives raised a large number of questions, which allowed for extended discussion on a variety of topics, including new build, infrastructure and conservation.
