It's going to be a night of mystery and fun at the Centenary Centre in Peel on the 11th November, when the Magicians of Mann present An Evening of Magic. The magic club, formed in 1952, promises a show that will entertain and amaze all the family. Early shows were staged at the Enchanted Hall at Laureston Mansion in Douglas, then the home of the late Dr. Alexander Cannon. In 1959 magician Arthur Culpin gave the club a silver cup, to be awarded annually to a member who performed the most entertaining act at a show. The first person to win the trophy was Percy Cowley, better known by his stage persona, Salamander. The competition will be part of An Evening of Magic, with the winner being awarded the cup and title Magician of Mann 2016. The award is currently held by the well known entertainer Colin Boardman, from Patrick.
Those taking part in the show, compered by Mike Clague, include Juan Corrin, Paul Martin, Michael Daniels, Chris Burns, Rosalie Beaumont, Nathan Hill, Fredrik Stromberg, Keith Greenland, Colin Boardman and Lexi Watterson. Mike explained "Interest in magic as a performing art is increasing at the moment, probably due in part to the popularity of high profile T.V. magicians such as Dynamo, Derren Brown and Penn & Teller. Nathan, from Ballasalla, will be the youngest member ever to compete for the trophy. This year will also be the first time that two female magicians have performed in one of our shows. 2016 marks the 25th anniversary of ladies being admitted to The Magic Circle in London, but they have always been welcomed as members of the Magicians of Mann." He added "The Centenary Centre is a fantastic venue for magic shows, and the volunteers there are a terrific team. We are running the show in conjunction with the Centre, and hope to raise a substantial amount for the Trustees."
Tickets for the show, which starts at 7.30pm, cost ?8 for adults and ?4 for children. They are available from Shakti Man in Ramsey, Thompson Travel in Port Erin, Celtic Gold in Peel, Peter Norris Music in Douglas and online at www.centenarycentre.com/whats-on
