Primary pupils’ musical treat

by isleofman.com 14th November 2016
More than 2,000 primary school pupils will be entertained by the Manx Youth Orchestra and two of its offshoots at the Villa Marina tomorrow (Tuesday).

The Music Service, part of the Department of Education and Children, is repeating concerts for primary schools that proved popular during Island of Culture celebrations in 2014.

Tomorrow’s two concerts will feature the senior Manx Youth Orchestra, which comes under the baton of Maggie Richardson, Head of Music Service, the Manx Youth Guitar Ensemble and the Manx Youth Jazz Orchestra.

The events are free to schools thanks to sponsorship from the Malcolm Scott Dickinson Charitable Trust.

Maggie said: ‘The 2014 concert was popular with the audience and performers alike and schools asked for it to be repeated.
‘It is intended, with continued support from the trust, to make this a biennial event.’

She added: ‘The programme includes well-known film themes and popular songs as well as light classical pieces. Different families of instruments will feature and there will be will be interactive moments, including singing the vocal echoes in Cab Calloway’s classic, Minnie the Moocher.

‘Music Service staff will also play an item, which will encourage everyone to get up and dance.’
