Port St Mary Commissioners have reason to celebrate this Christmas as the cost of refuse disposal in the village has fallen by ?9263 or 6.5% according to their audited accounts to 31st March 2016.
The authority recycled 97.3 tonnes of material in its second full year of operation, slightly up on the 94.5 tonnes in its first year. The majority of the material recycled was either paper or glass, each of which contributed 42 tonnes. Overall their kerbside scheme extracted 15.3% of the waste arising from households in the village.
Mrs Bernadette Williams, Chairman of Port St Mary Commissioners said,
“We are delighted by the continued success of this scheme. Our fortnightly collections are popular and more of our residents appear to be taking part. The fact that our costs of disposal are falling is a bonus. Money that would have been spent on waste disposal can now be put to better use in our community.
We are all aware of the need to conserve the limited resources on the planet. What we are doing makes perfect environmental sense, is financially viable and is schooling the next generation to be better custodians of the planet.
What we do is only a part of the overall recycling effort. The Department of Infrastructure bring banks remain popular and our Civic Amenity Site, the Southern Recycling Centre, seems busier than ever.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of our households for taking part in this initiative. Without their participation we would not succeed."
