High winds brought tree down onto vehicle

by isleofman.com 13th January 2017

At 07.36hrs on the 13th January ESJCR mobilised fire crews from Peel station to attend a single vehicle road traffic collision at Ballacraine. High winds had led to a tree falling onto a moving vehicle with two occupants inside.  The uninjured passenger of commercial vehicle had managed to get himself free prior to fire service arrival but the driver remained trapped in the vehicle due to damage to the offside door. Hydraulic cutting and spreading equipment was used to extricate the driver. Treatment for a minor hand injury sustained by the driver was given on scene by fire service personnel.

It was found that the fallen tree had damaged overhead power cables leading to loss of power to the traffic lights and houses in the local vicinity. The Department of Infrastructure were contacted to attend so that the tree could be removed and the road reopened.
