The year-long celebration of the Island’s built environment moves up a gear this spring with a wide range of live events to encourage everyone to take a greater interest in the buildings around them and join in the conversation about the value of both heritage and modern design.
Poetry, music and a series of talks from visiting speakers will take place around the Island all under the ‘Isle of Architecture’ banner.
February sees performance poetry from Year 9 students from QEII at the House of Manannan (Wednesday 15th) and the next ‘gig in a special space’, music from choir Caarjyn Cooidjagh at the Western Swimming Pool, Peel (Saturday 18th).
The first of a series of Isle of Architecture talks is on Thursday 2 March when celebrated historian and author Dr Kathryn Ferry will talk about seaside architecture, using examples from the Island to explore the trends that defined the Victorian and inter-war eras. . In April, Manx born architect Hannah Corlett from award-winning London practice Assemblage will discuss highlights from her career at Noa Bakehouse on Thursday 6th, and later in the month architect Jasmin Eastwood will look at contemporary rural design.
And a definite date for the diaries of any music lover – a one-off pop-up gig from local musicians in a really special space, the Crows’ Nest of the Sea Terminal on 1 April. Details are firmly under wraps for now, but as the Crows’ Nest is not usually accessible to the public and there’s never been any sort of a music event held there, Isle of Architecture organisers are expecting a lot of interest when tickets go on sale.
For full details of all Isle of Architecture events, buy tickets and to be first to know when the Crows’ Nest gig tickets become available all you need to do is like the Facebook page www.facebook.com/isleofarchitecture. And whilst you’re there why not upload a photo of a favourite building, say why it’s important to you, and add the hashtag #ilovethisbuilding to be in the running to win a fabulous prize from restaurant 14 North? Be quick, the competition ends on 14 February.
Isle of Architecture is a joint venture between Culture Vannin, the Trustees of Manx National Heritage and the Society of Architects.
