A street collection on the Isle of Man for the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal for Yemen has raised more than ?4,500.
The money, collected by volunteers in Douglas, Ramsey, Peel, Castletown and Port Erin, has gone directly to the DEC to be distributed to aid agencies working in Yemen to provide lifesaving aid; food, water and sanitation, cash assistance and food vouchers.
Almost 19 million people – 70% of the population in Yemen – are now in need of humanitarian assistance, including 10 million people who are in acute need. Malnutrition is widespread and water is scarce. The country’s internal conflict, which has gone largely unreported, is now compounded by a naval embargo and no-fly zone that have severely impacted food security in what was already one of the poorest countries in the region.
The collection on the Island was co-ordinated by the One World Centre, which is grateful to all the volunteers who helped. People also donated through collecting boxes in the Manx Co-op foodstores, Shakti Man in Ramsey and the Oxfam shop in Douglas.
The DEC Yemen Appeal is still open and more information can be found at www.dec.org.uk/appeal/yemen-crisis-appeal
