Local architects, students and enthusiasts are taking part in ‘On Buildings’, a PechaKucha event at the Alpine, Douglas on Thursday 16 March from 6.30pm and anyone interested in the built environment is welcome to attend. This exciting presentation format, which allows participants to talk about and illustrate details of the buildings that inspire them and inform their work by quickly showing 20 images for 20 seconds each, has been organised by Isle of Architecture to celebrate our built environment and stimulate discussion and conversation. And the cafe is joining in with an ‘Architecture’ inspired menu for the evening.
‘On Buildings’ is free to attend (not including food and drink), but because space is limited, booking is essential. Please see
www.isleofarchitecture.com/events for details of how to reserve your place.
The topics to be covered in the ‘On Buildings’ Pechakucha include the reuse of church buildings, Manx keills, the architecture of Vienna, registered buildings in the Isle of Man and the works of modernist Swiss architect Peter Zumthor.
Martyn Thomas, chairman of the Isle of Man Society of Architects, says there will be something of interest to everyone who is interested in architecture and the built environment:
"The PechaKucha format is great; the presentations have to be well organised and concise and the format really lends itself to visual subject matter. As each one is so short, there is the opportunity to cover a good range of topics in a relatively short space of time, in this case from the remains of the Manx Keills to one of the current world architecture greats! Isle of Architecture is about drawing everyone’s attention to the quality and character of our built environment,” Martyn continues. “Opening the conversation up to experts and non-experts alike is a key aim of the project and ‘On Buildings’ will help do just that."
The Alpine will offering a special selection of their dishes from around the world, named after different architects including 'The Zaha' and 'The Gehry'. The bar and cafe will be open from 6.30pm and the Pechakucha 20 x 20 presentations will begin, of course, at 20.20 (8.20pm).
