Isle of Man Choral Society to sing in New York

by isleofman.com 20th March 2017

The Isle of Man Choral Society has accepted an invitation to sing the world premier premiere of a new work by Sir Karl Jenkins in the Carnegie Hall in New York on Monday 15th January 2018.

The concert, at which Sir Karl Jenkins will be present, is with a professional orchestra and conductor, Dr Jonathan Griffith.  Dr Griffith wrote to Julian Power, conductor and musical director of IOM Choral Society, saying "IOMCS received this invitation because of the quality and high level of musicianship demonstrated by the singers".

As the singers will have to pay for their travel and accommodation for the 5 days and 4 nights in New York, meals etc, likely to cost approximately ?1,600, not all are able to attend.  So IOMCS is keen to invite other experienced singers to join IOMCS for this event, which membership will also entitle them to sing with IOMCS in their 2018 Verdi Requiem concert on 25th March 2018.

The choir that visited New York for the similar Sir Karl Jenkins concert this January, reported to Julian Power that it was "an outstanding success, very well organized and a wonderful experience".  So if you would like to know more, full details and an application form will be available at IOMCS concert on Sunday 2nd April.

At 2:30 on Sunday 2nd April, in the Villa Marina, accompanied by the wonderful IOM Symphony Orchestra, IOMCS will be singing Mendelssohn's Hymn of Praise.  This work (part of his 2nd Symphony) features the lovely duet “I waited for the Lord”, which will be sung by Karen Elliott and Mandy Griffin, and the Hymn tune, “Now Thank we all our God”.  Two other short works will be performed, Rutter's exciting Gloria and Mascagni's thrilling Easter Hymn supported by Meadowside Choral Society.  IOMSO will also treat us to a rendition of Mascagni's most beautiful Intermezzo - currently in Classic FM's top 30 favourite classical pieces.

The organisers in New York are keen to know just how many singers Julian Power will be bringing with him to New York.  They are looking for a non-refundable commitment fee of ?200 each from each singing member before 11th April.
